Basketball Hey Guys...new here, need some help

Hey guys, ive been out of collecting for quite some time now and after doing some research i can see that this hobby has really changed! now that i have some extra time and money i decided that i would like to get back into it..so in your opinions, what is the best way to start? i love busting boxes so possibly buying a couple half cases or cases of decent product? or should i just look for good deals on ebay and at local card shows of players i like? if i decide to buy some wax, what are some good products to buy from over the past couple of years and where is the best place online to buy?

BK, buy someone else's collection on ebay. That is how I would start. Then you have a variety of cards without a huge amount of base. And right now, they can be had for a good price typically.
 
If you are buying boxes, I wouldn't recommend that newbies buy off Ebay.
It is only through trial and error that the veteran collectors know which guys to trust on Ebay ;)

It is perfectly fine to buy singles, collections etc off Ebay though :)

If you are after cheap boxes, there are online stores that sell them.
A couple of those stores sponsor this site and have advertisements all around. Just click on one of the advertisements to browse their stores :)

I always recommend Bhelser1981, a moderator here who sells products as well.

i actually just found a really great deal on a case of 06/07 sp authentic..i know its not a great year to buy but at least theres some big hit possibilities...i also bought some nice singles on ebay so between those two, it should get me started..

i will post results of break..im not sure if anyone does live breaks on here but i may do that too
 
Bklyn24 - If you haven't bought the SP Authentic yet, I can get you a price quote. I may be able to beat or meet the price, and mine come directly from the distributor. If you buy it from Ebay, you are risking getting tampered boxes.

Just a thought.

i actually did buy the sp authentic but it was not off ebay..i will be buying a couple more cases of different product within the next week so i will definitely let you know what im looking for..thanks
 
You could start a new thread in basketball discussion and hobby talk.

Or if the cards you get will be for trade, do it in basketball cards :)

Thanks I hope to get some nice cards, either way it will be fun busting open all those boxes

The cards will be for trade so I'll post in basketball cards

Should be getting the case tomorrow or Saturday so I'll post when I get it

Yea I am from Brooklyn originally but live in new jersey temporarily..I plan on starting a player collection soon but right now I'm just trying to get a collection started
 
Good to see you getting back into the hobby. I did the same thing about 18 months ago. I jumped in with a player collection of Danny Granger. Started pretty slow but as I started learning my way on the Beckett boards (R.I.P.) I started making some good friends and trade partners and ended up building the collection through trades and ebay.

If you're going to buy a case and aren't looking to spend an arm and a leg, I'd say go with Bowman Draft Picks & Stars. It's a really fun product to break and there are tons of parallels and variations to be had. Or you could wait a week or so until Topps Chrome comes out and it will be available for close to the same price as Bowman. I've yet to purchase a case in my lifetime but I'd really like to get a case of one of those two products soon.
