Longtime Detroit Lions offensive lineman Bob Kowalkowski has died at the age of 65.

The team says Kowalkowski died Thursday night at a hospital in suburban Detroit.

Kowalkowski was a starting guard for most of his 11 seasons with the Lions after he was drafted out of Virginia in 1965. He was traded to Cleveland in 1977 and finished his career playing four games for coach Bart Starr and the Green Bay Packers in 1977.

Since 1990, Kowalkowski's wife, Judy, has worked in Detroit's front office. His son, Scott, was signed as a free agent by the Lions in 1994 and was a standout on special teams and at linebacker through 2001.

Funeral arrangements were pending.
