We found this coin around the 1983-1985 time period while refinishing an antique piece of furniture. It was jammed down the backing of the wood, and was only found when we removed the mirror attached to the piece. I've read about these, and am aware that there was a fake Readers Digest remake of this coin, but all indications from what I read tells me that those came out 11-12 years after this one was found, so I think it's possibly the real deal? The fake ones apparently have a dark center discolouring from the tape residue used to hold it in place in the magazine, but I don't see any showing of this on the coin. I don't have a scale to weigh it like some suggest. Can anyone tell me if this can be real, and what it is worth? Thanks!

That's neat, if it's real! I'm not familiar enough with these to tell which is real and which is the fake from looking at an image. We have had this come up on CoinTalk a few times, here's a few relevant links:

    It comes up regularly :)

After reading up on this there's probably a good chance this is not a real coin, and one of those fakes. I was optimistic because of when this was found, in comparison to when the Readers Digest replica coins were introduced according to reports I read, but it's entirely possible that the date these appeared was posted incorrectly. If these came out in the mid to late 80's, then that would probably make this fake for sure.

Can you tell if it's real gold or not?

I can't, but I really have no knowledge about anything coin, or precious metal related. The real thing is suppose to be non-magnetic, and weighs about 3.5 grams, where the fakes are supposedly in the 2.5-2.6 grams range. Gonna try to find someone with a scale, and weigh it when I get a chance. If it's a heavier weight, then I will definitely take it somewhere, but I'm just not feeling optimistic after reading about it. If the time frame posted on when the fakes were made, and inserted in the magazine is off, then it's possible this is not real. What had me excited was the fact that is was found in an antique piece of furniture well over 100 years old (125 now), and it was jammed in a place where it looked like could have sat there for that long. Trying to remember exactly when we found this, as I thought it was in the 83-85 year range, but memory is hazy, and it could have been closer to the late 80's, or even early 1990's, which is getting close to the fake release date. Maybe someone hid it there to fool the new owner of the antique piece? Who knows? Even if it's real, not something one could retire on at a max value of well under $1000, but would be cool to keep for a memento.

It's worth finding out anyway. Any jeweler will be able to tell you if it's real gold, or if you have a coin chops nearby you could bring it in and ask.

Yes, I definitely will take it in when I think of it. Doesn't hurt to find out.

If you have a coin dealer near by...I would go see them before I would have a jeweler check it out. They might be able to give you a better idea on authenticity and grade. Unfortunately, I am by far no expert on Austrian coinage. German yes...Austrian, no.

Or...ask over at CT. Tons of experts over there of all kinds of coins. I'm sure someone can give you some insight.
